The common themes of the research projects in DMO are data mining/knowledge discovery and Optimization.
Data Mining or also known as Knowledge Discovery is the process of finding general or hidden patterns/knowledge from large data sets. Therefore, effective and efficient techniques and automated data mining tools are needed to help during the extraction of these patterns. The techniques and technology will allow users to analyze data from many different dimensions or angles, categorize it, and summarize the relationships identified.
Optimization is a mathematical discipline that concerns the finding of minima and maxima of functions, subject to so-called constraints. Optimization techniques can be used for example to generates timetables and schedules for factory, military, school, university or hospital application. Optimization techniques are applied to a wide variety of problems, from the scheduling of university course and exam time tabling to yield management in industries. Today, optimization comprises a wide variety of techniques from Operations Research, artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science.
